Cherokee County sits at the southern edge of the Blue Ridge foothills, and Woodstock's terrain reflects that. Lots throughout the city slope, sometimes gently and sometimes sharply, and water moving off higher ground follows those slopes directly toward the foundations sitting at the bottom of them. A home that sits in a low point between two elevated sections of a neighborhood receives runoff from both sides, not just what falls on its own lot.
The clay soil that covers most of the area holds that water for a long time. Cracks that allow water through during or after rain are under active pressure from saturated clay outside. On sloped lots, that pressure can be significant. A crack that seeps a small amount now will typically let in more as the soil continues working on it.
Hairline separations in walls or floors that are not yet leaking are still worth attention. Clay that expands and contracts through every wet and dry season widens small cracks gradually. In a home built on graded hillside ground, that movement starts early and does not stop.

On a sloped lot, water does not press against a foundation evenly. It concentrates on the downhill side, where runoff from higher ground adds to what the soil is already holding. That changes how a sump pump system needs to be designed. The pit location, the drain channels feeding into it, and how the discharge line is routed all depend on where water is actually collecting beneath the home.
The pit is installed at the lowest point of the basement. Water that collects there, whether from drain channels, seepage through the floor, or rising groundwater, triggers the pump when it reaches a set level. The pump moves that water out through a discharge line to a safe location away from the foundation. A check valve prevents it from flowing back in once the pump shuts off.
