Keep Your Home Safe From Radon

In the soil all around us, there are trace amounts of uranium. As that uranium naturally breaks down and decays, radon gas is released and seeps into the ground, the air, and the water. While radon might not be on everyone’s minds, it is important to remember that radon can become dangerous as the levels get higher.

In fact, radon can increase your chances of lung cancer, multiplying the risk more as the levels of radon in your home rises.

Fortunately, there are easy ways that you can test for radon. If you do have levels above 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter of air) – or levels you are comfortable with – there are measures you can take to mitigate that presence of radon in your home. Call for ’58 Foundations to schedule a detailed estimate for radon removal!

Radon Mitigation Can Keep the Danger Out of Your Home

When it comes to things invading your home, you may first think about pests crawling in and water seeping through cracks. But present in the soil all around you are trace amounts of uranium that is decaying into hazardous radon gas. Normally, it’s nothing of a concern because the amounts are so small. But your home can become a trap for that radon gas as it seeps through cracks in your foundation and through other openings. As that trapped radon builds up, it can reach dangerous levels and present a threat to your health and that of your loved ones.

According to the EPA, every year radon accounts for more than 20,000 deaths and is the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smoking individuals. While radon can’t be 100% avoided, measures should be taken to reduce the presence of radon to less than 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter of air). With the right radon reduction solutions in place, you can reduce your home’s radon levels by as much as 99%, making your home that much safer.

But radon is invisible, and you can’t smell or taste it, so to get a sense of your home’s radon levels, you will need to perform a radon test. Fortunately, radon tests are inexpensive and quick to perform.

Both the EPA and the Surgeon General recommend that you should test your home to see if your radon levels need to be addressed. Even at 2 pCi/L, your risk of cancer becomes 6 times greater than the risk of dying from poison—reducing your radon levels as much as possible is always recommended.

Along with our foundation repair and waterproofing services, ’58 Foundations also specializes in radon mitigation. In fact, our waterproofing and encapsulation services offer a passive radon mitigation effect, but we can enhance it and make it active with our ventilation fan. Once you’ve confirmed radon levels are above 4 picocuries per liter, give us a call to schedule a free estimate for removal.

Ways That Radon Can Enter the Home

With radon being a gas, it can seep out of the earth and into your home through gaps, cracks, and even just the ground of your dirt crawlspace. Radon can even be found in the water supply. Here’s a list of common ways that radon can infiltrate your home…

  • Cracks in solid floors such as your foundation floor
  • Space in construction joints
  • Cracks in walls like your basement wall
  • The dirt floor of your dirt crawlspace
  • Spaces in suspended floors
  • Spaces around service pipes
  • Cavities within walls
  • Your water supply

For many of these, the reason for radon gas getting drawn into your home is due to the physics of what’s called the “Stack Effect.” This is caused by the difference of pressure in the interior of your home and the outside, creating a vacuum effect that pulls the radon gas in from the soil beneath and around your home. By addressing this difference in pressure, the Stack Effect can be countered, or the radon gas redirected into the atmosphere, and you can lower the radon levels in your home.

How Can I Have My Radon Levels Lowered?

’58 Foundations offers waterproofing and encapsulation services for your basement and crawlspace that can help provide a passive form of radon mitigation. With the addition of a ventilation fan that we can install along with these measures, we can create the negative pressure necessary to draw the radon gas safely out and away from your home.

For basements, our waterproofing system is a sealed system, meaning that the radon gas that leaks through your basement walls or through the earth under your basement will be guided to our drainage channels where they will be directed along with any water. A ventilation fan will then create the negative pressure needed to speed the radon gas along and out of your house. Our basement waterproofing system may include installing a barrier along your basement wall to trap radon gas leaking through, so that it can be guided down to the drainage channels.

For your crawlspace, our waterproofing and encapsulation systems can help create a passive mitigation system for radon gas. By encapsulating your crawlspace with a sturdy membrane, the radon gas seeping out from the soil beneath your home will be trapped, waiting to be guided up by an installed ventilation fan.

For both basements and crawlspaces, the negative pressure created by our radon mitigation solution will help actively draw radon gas out of your house and prevent radon gas from accumulating within your home.

This system is largely hidden in your basement.

The drain lines are installed flush with your basement floor, right where the floor meets your basement wall. These lines converge at a sump pit – a circular hole in the basement floor where a sump pump is installed. The sump pump is equipped with a float valve. Whenever the collected water in the sump pit reaches a preset level, the sump pump turns on automatically, pumping the water outside.

The reliability of this interior waterproofing system isn’t difficult to understand. While the exterior waterproofing system attempts to seal every leak and gap in the foundation, – a nearly impossible task that does little to relieve hydrostatic pressure – the interior drain-and-sump system minimizes hydrostatic pressure by providing a drainage system to remove basement moisture.
