Gaps between the bottom of a wall and the floor, or the top of the wall and the ceiling are a noted foundation problem, and are common in (but not limited to) homes with truss roofs.
These gaps happen more frequently to walls in the middle areas of a home, and not so much to external, or perimeter, walls. If you notice one of these gaps, take a few minutes to walk around the walls on the inside part of your home and look for other gaps—remember to look both high on the walls next to the ceiling and low on the walls next to the floor.
These gaps indicate that the support columns supporting that part of the floor/wall have settled at a different rate than the rest of the house.
Sloping floors are another common symptom of settling support columns. Take note of sloping floors, both near the wall with the cracks between the floor or ceiling, and around other areas of the house.
Settling columns are commonly caused by improper drainage of surface water, including gutters. But there are many other common causes as well, ranging from soil conditions to waterproofing problems in the basement or crawlspace.
